I use these five steps to describe a person centered approach to helping others develop and achieve their goals:
- Connect and Commit
- Open with Objectives
- Assess, Affirm and Appreciate
- Create a Plan
- Honor the How
These steps are built on principles of coaching and appreciative inquiry and are useful to those who are just beginning to learn about their coaching role as well as experienced coaches looking to reflect on and enhance their current practice. The COACH Approach is outlined below in greater detail. Practical coaching cards are also available through Helen Sanderson Associates. They provide a brief overview of coaching techniques coupled with an example demonstrating the technique in a coaching conversation, and tips on how to get started.
